The Nine Yanas with H.E. Mindrolling Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche

The Gradual Path of the Nyingmapas, Part I

Course number
4.6
Instructor/teacher
Description

This year H.E. Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche will begin teaching on the nine yanas (vehicles) and will thereby provide an introduction to a topic that is both vast and profound. The nine yanas represent nothing less than the entire spectrum of the gradual path to buddhahood according to the Tibetan Nyingma tradition. They comprise each and every aspect of the Buddha’s teachings.

Beginning with the three outer vehicles (Sutrayana), the nine yanas then progress through the three inner vehicles to the three secret vehicles (Tantrayana). The first three–the vehicle of hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas–are generally known as the two vehicles of the Basic Vehicle (Hinayana) and the vehicle of the Mahayana. The three inner vehicles correspond to the first three of the four classes of tantra (Kriya tantra, Charya tantra, and Yoga tantra) in the Vajrayana, which are practiced as outer tantric yanas. The three secret vehicles are the three inner tantric vehicles–Mahayoga, Anuyoga, and Atiyoga. These powerful, transformative methods for completing the path lead the authentic practitioner to buddhahood.

Khandro Rinpoche’s explanations provide practitioners with an overview of the gradual progression of the nine yanas. Her explanations also help practitioners to see their own meditative practices in a larger context and serve as precious meditation instructions.
