The basis of this retreat is The Treasury of Knowledge, a unique ten-volume encyclopedia that contains the teachings and meditation practices of all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It was compiled by Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Thaye (1813–1899), one of the leading figures of the religious reforms in eastern Tibet in the 19th century (Rimé movement).
Three very important goals were pursued by him: the collecting of texts and meditation methods in order to preserve them, the counteracting of sectarian biases, and the restoration of the importance of practising and applying the dharma in daily life.
The stages of this silent retreat are:
Stage 1: Samatha and vipassana meditation according to the explanations in the Treasury of Knowledge
Stage 2: Opening one’s own heart: Developing the pure view of a bodhisattva
Stage 3: Wisdom and insight meditation
Stage 4: Deeping the vipassana meditation practice
This retreat begins anew each year with Stage 1. The stages are taught parallel to each other (i.e. not consecutively).
- Other information
Silence should be maintained throughout nearly the entire retreat. The participants should also not telephone, watch television, or leave the Institute.
