Introduction to the Meaning of the Five Paths and 10 Bodhisattva Bhumis

Course number
8.2
Instructor/teacher
Description

According to the Paths of Gradual Awakening (Tib. Lam Rim) the progress in one’s practice of the Buddha-Dharma and in meditation practice occurs gradually at best. One may wonder what could be achieved by following these paths in the long run. There are answers to this on a beginner’s level or if you try to practice along side your daily activities.

But there are also teachings on the higher levels of achievement so that one may have an idea what the long-term results of practicing Dharma and meditations could be.

The classical book “The Jewel Ornament of Liberation” by the 12th century master Gampopa gives an outlook on the higher stages of the path.
These serve as an inspiration that there are deeper experiences and realization to be attained.

They are described as the Five Paths and the 10 Bodhisattva Bhumis.

The Five Paths are:

1. The Path of Accumulation
2. The Path of Junction/Application
3. The Path of Seeing
4. The Path of Deeper Meditation
5. The Path of No More Learning

They are related to the 10 Bhumis.

In brief:
On the Path of Seeing one could reach at the 1st Bhumi calles „Great Joy“.
On the Path of Meditation you would progress on the Bhumis, the steps to Awakening until you reach at radiance and luminosity.

Along these stages one would also need to train with difficulties and how to overcome them so as to carry on. The Bhumis are mainly cultivated by an intensive meditation-progress.
If one participates in this weekend one will be endowed with a map for these paths and stages.
